Somewhere, out there in the blogosphere, someone is talking about your industry and maybe your company. What they say might please you or it might shock you.
What is even more of a problem is that it may be your own employees who are contributing to the debate!
Sue Tumelty, of The HR Dept, in Bristol, says companies need to be aware of the potential problems and introduce measures to deal with the possibility.
When someone publishes a blog, millions of other blog readers are paying attention.
As well as being a potential problem, it can also be a tremendous opportunity, which an increasing number of major corporations and businesses are currently taking advantage of.
As well as knowing what bloggers are saying, however, itís important to protect your company in what is the fastest growing area of the Internet?
ìWe are living in a digital age, but many companies simply havenít changed their employment contracts or policies to reflect this ñ as a result itís a bloggersí paradise,î says Sue.
ìSome of the problems weíve seen include people revealing embarrassing things about their own and colleaguesí private lives; discussion of sensitive company issues; criticism of company or management style and attacks on the effectiveness of products or services.î
Sue says increasing numbers of cases are coming to tribunals involving employees who have been dismissed after being caught blogging ñ but many companies are losing because they have not got a specific policy for dealing with the problem.
