What's the hottest single scene at the moment? Chances are it is the workplace with a staggering 62% of employees knowing someone whose romance started in the workplace. However 82% of employers believe office romances are wrong.
Peter Done, managing director of Peninsula said today; David Beckham and Angelina Jolie may top the celebrity wish list for office romances and I think employers are going to be happy with that choice, however, when it comes to relationships with fellow workers, that's when the headache starts. It's not surprising that 82% of employers think workplace romances are a bad idea. Office romances are not always rosy and can often result in nasty break-ups giving the employer a nasty headache. If the problem gets really bad then the disgruntled employee may even file a sexual harassment claim against the employer resulting in a costly litigation claim.
There are a number of reasons why office romances are blossoming. More women are working in more traditional areas of industry and with the longer working hour culture for all employees they are spending more time away from home and more time in the workplace. Naturally people make friends within their workplace environments and can often share the same passion and interests.
Peter Done continues; Additionally where a relationship forms between supervisory staff and more junior workers then it may result in favouritism towards the member of staff which antagonises fellow workers. Even if this is not the case the perception of favouritism may be present, which again will cause problems for the employer.
However, it is going to prove difficult for an employer to ban office relationships, and almost impossible to control. Instead of banning relationships look to ways of managing them. Give proper training to all staff upon commencing employment. Explain the problems associated with relationships in the workplace. Clearly state to staff in management positions the complications workplace romances between management and junior staff can have. Employers may wish to discourage displays of affection which can often make other colleagues feel uncomfortable. However I discourage implementing rules to ban relationships completely as this will result in lower morale and will prove very difficult to control as it's likely the relationship will continue out of hours with or without your consent.
Done concludes; Maybe the best option is to encourage employees to stick to the celebrities they would like to have an office romance with. It may be safer and easier for all involved.
