A new year often brings about new resolutions and encourages people to seek out new career challenges, either due to boredom or feeling overstretched in a current position.

The first thing to remember is not to make a rash decision as the grass is not always greener on the other side - take some time off over Christmas to think things through. Making a list of the pros and cons of moving or staying can help. Ask yourself if there are avenues for advancement to pursue within your current firm, as knowing the ins and outs of the business is often a better position to be in than starting a new job in a new company.

At Sellick Partnership, when prospective candidates are thinking of moving onto the locum market or into other fields, we introduce them to other locums and professional contractors who have made similar moves. By speaking directly with people who have been through what you are going through, you can make informed choices.

Itís not always advisable to give up your existing job straight away. It can help to gain new skills either on a voluntary basis, working evenings, or part time where possible. This will also give you some stability cash-wise.

In addition, using a specialist agency to help you in whatever professional market you choose to go into is invaluable. These companies know the market inside out and are expert at presenting candidates in a favourable light.

Above all, be confident and positive with your choice - this is your time to make the right decision for yourself and your future. We spend a lot of time at work, so make sure you are happy with it!
