Helping employees to Wise Up At Work is good for business

A new approach to equip employees to help themselves, and in turn their employer, is being used by WiseUpAtWork. Traditional training techniques would make it too expensive to train each employee in how to help themselves, but with modern technology, broadband connection to the Internet and very affordable access to high quality on-line learning, it is now possible ñ and it can be delivered anywhere and at any time.

Why would you want to help employees to help themselves? These days retention of talented people is a big issue. More people want something extra from their employer which provides them with a higher quality of life. Training employees in how to engage with their employer or line manager to get the best they can from workplace discussions, opens the door to real engagement that gets as close to a win-win situation as possible - a similar idea to companies assisting customers in order to retain their loyalty. Employees receiving such support will feel that the psychological contract is strengthened and they will be less inclined to go elsewhere. In addition, as their confidence grows, their contribution will be much higher.

Many best practice employers would agree that this mature, non-adversarial approach helps foster good employment relations, which are so important in attracting and retaining the best talent. Helping employees to help themselves, and in turn helping their employer, would appear to make good business sense.

Mike Healy, a Fellow of the CIPD, believes that employees want more than just pay and benefits. He believes all employees want to be listened to, want a voice and want to have some influence within their small part of the company.

He says I believe that every employee should have the opportunity to influence his or her future career and be trained to make the most of that opportunity when it arises, whether it is at an internal interview, an appraisal or even at a disciplinary hearing or redundancy meeting.

Imagine all employees felt empowered and confident enough to proactively and positively engage with their employers to make life better for themselves? Now there's something to think about!

Mike Healy has just launched four on-line learning programmes at www.wiseupatwork.com which offer all employees access to very affordable, high quality training programmes to help them engage better with their employers. He can be contacted at: mikehealy@wiseupatwork.com or telephone 0845 643 2649.
