Acre leads the green business revolution

The past few years have seen ethical and environmental responsibility become commonplace, and market awareness has reached an all-time high. As these issues climb the agenda, new businesses are emerging across the UK with a focus on all things 'green'.

An example is Acre Resources, the leading recruitment consultancy in the Environmental and Sustainability sectors. Acre is helping to speed up the 'greening' of the business landscape with phenomenal success - and they're joined by a new breed of entrepreneurial companies set up to help push forward the environmental agenda.

As green issues permeate every aspect of our lives, talented professionals are specialising in the sector and business is booming. Acre was founded in 2003 by two forward-thinking entrepreneurs ñ Tom Leathes and Andy Cartland, who saw the growth potential in this job market. Starting out with just two people, Acre has expanded their business up to a total of 14 staff in just three years and has doubled revenue every year to an impressive projected turnover of 1m in 2008.

This is far from a passing phase - a new generation of young, dynamic and ethically minded companies are forging ahead of the crowd. The UK is a hothouse of activity in terms of ethical consumerism, and recent research has shown that our buying public are leading the world in terms of education and action on environmental awareness. Public pressure is forcing companies to be more accountable for their environmental impacts, and Acre have been supplying hundreds of talented professionals to companies of all shapes and sizes to address these issues.

Andy Cartland, director of Acre Resources, said: ìRoles such as ëClimate Change Managerí, reporting to the board, are becoming commonplace within major blue chips. With consumers demanding more environmentally-friendly products, and investors putting pressure on companies to take action, Sustainability is an issue thatís being pushed high up the corporate agenda. Judging from the work weíve been doing recently, it wonít be long before entire teams focusing on these issues within all major companies becomes the norm.î

Tom Leathes of Acre is positive about the future: ìSustainable Development is presenting big opportunities for companies, as well as issues to be addressed. Through a flexible and commercially-driven approach, weíre helping organisations hire people to shape their businesses for the better in the context of this new approach.î

Not content with being leaders in green recruitment throughout the UK, Acre are set to take their expertise over to America in 2008, as the demand for environmental experts starts to take off across the pond.
