British Business Takes a Stand against Bullying

.

British business is doing more to beat bullying than almost any other country in the world and has saved 3.42 billion in the last 12 months by taking a stand to combat this serious issue, according to new research from global workplace bullying charity, The Andrea Adams Trust to mark Ban Bullying at Work Day (7th November 2007). www.banbullyingatwork.com.

The number of UK plc businesses now writing up specific policies and procedures and providing specialist training to deal with workplace bullying has almost doubled from 11% in 2006 to 19% in 2007. With workplace bullying estimated to cost UK plc 18 billion annually, this equates to a total annual saving of 3.42 billion. Organisers predict that around 5 million employees, around 17.3% or one sixth of Britainís workforce will be taking part in National Ban Bullying at Work Day on 7th November.

Lyn Witheridge, Founder and CEO, The Andrea Adams Trust said; ìThe fear of being associated with an anti bullying campaign, in case it suggested they had this problem, initially prevented many organisations from partaking in our campaign. However, I am hugely encouraged that the number of organizations now having the courage to speak out against bullying and the insidious effect it has on morale and productivity will ensure that 5 million people in Britain take part on the 7th November.

Unions and Businesses from small private companies to large public sector organisations including The Royal Mail, British Airways, BT, The Department of Health, The Department of Transport and Legal & General are all supporting the ethos of the campaign and our third National Day, as well as Charities including Amnesty International and The Childrenís Society. It is incredible growth in just 3 years and proves that businesses both large and small are putting their heads above the parapet to finally speak out against workplace bullying and to be proud of partaking in our campaign.î

Other statistics in the survey show which industry sectors are specifically embracing anti-bullying policies. The City has shown the largest increase as the major stock market players seek to maximize financial benefits and increase productivity of their workforce.

The Andrea Adams Trust is marking the day with a balloon launch at the Kensington Roof Gardens. Hundreds of balloons will be released across the London skyline, each one carrying a personal message against workplace bullying that have been left by members of the public at www.banbullyingatwork.com/speak-out-balloon.html
