Susie Ankrett, Director of Plum Personnel in Solihull watched from the gallery in the House of Commons as MPs nodded their approval for her winning idea to extend the right to request flexible working.
When Lorely Burt, Solihullís MP for the Liberal Democrats was selected for a second time in the ballot for the Private Memberís Bill she appealed to her constituents for ideas. Susie suggested calling for a Bill to extend the right of parents to request flexible working hours.
Lorely Burt, seized on the idea to introduce the Bill to the House of Commons. Currently parentís rights to working flexible hours are limited to the first 6 years of parenthood. The Bill was read on Wednesday 28th October and called for parentís rights to be extended until the child is 18.
Commenting, Mrs Burt said:
The lack of flexible working lies at the very heart of economic inequality between men and women.
There are too many women in jobs beneath their skill level. The right to request flexible working should ensure that business does not lose out on womenís talent and also allow women to fulfil their potential.
Commenting further, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Susan Kramer MP said:
Flexible working can be very good for business, it can reduce absenteeism, increase recruitment and retention, and reduce stress.
Flexible working can increase staff well-being which in turn improves customer service and satisfaction.
Fears that flexible working rights will damage business are unwarranted. A request can be turned down if a valid business case is presented.
Susie commented, ìIt was a momentous and incredibly memorable day for me. To watch parliament in action was a great privilege.
ìI am confident that the Bill will increases awareness in recognising the benefits flexible working can offer not only to families but also business and society as a whole.
ìWithout a doubt flexible working can open up a pool of talent to employers and be a real positive contributor to a happier, more productive and loyal workforce.î
The second reading of the Bill has been approved for October.
