British workers exercise conscious

Over 70 per cent of UK employees fit exercise into their working day

Over 70 per cent of UK employees fit exercise into their working day, according to a recent poll by leading national staffing services company, Select Appointments. Of the 1,585 poll participants, 22 per cent manage to fit in lunchtime or after work sessions at the gym, while a further 22 per cent walk or cycle to work.

In addition, 372 of those polled opt to take the stairs instead of the lift at the office. Surprisingly, 26 people claim to do yoga exercises at their desks.

Carolyn Walker, Human Resources Manager at Select Appointments, said: It’s worrying that 30 per cent of those polled don’t do any form of exercise during the working week. Exercise can help to prevent burn out, give employees a ’feel good’ factor and enhance work-life balance, which is why employers should actively encourage their workers to partake in some form of activity. We have recently taken the proactive decision to change healthcare provider to PruHealth, as they take a more holistic approach to healthcare and general well-being. We have promoted our new healthcare scheme internally to urge employees to take advantage of benefits such as discounted gym membership.

To fit in more physical activity while you’re on the job:

1. Make the most of your commuting time. Walk or cycle to work. If you take the bus to and from work, get off a few stops before yours and walk the rest of the way.

2. Take the stairs whenever you can. If you have a meeting on the 14th floor, get out of the lift a few floors before and use the stairs.

3. Take fitness breaks instead of coffee breaks. Spend the time taking a 15-minute walk.

4. Start a lunchtime walking group with your colleagues

5. Treat exercise as you would any other appointment. Don’t change your exercise plans if something else comes along - remind yourself that exercise is just as important.
