PSL consultant to present paper at European Conference of personality

Dr Joanna Moutafi, a consultant at assessment specialist PSL, will be presenting a paper outlining how personality and intelligence relate to simulated job performance, measured by performance in assessment centres, at the prestigious European Conference of Personality, in Athens on 22-26 July.

Organised by the Department of Psychology of the University of Athens, on behalf of the European Association of Personality Psychology, the conference is one of the worldís premier events for the sharing of ideas and experience in psychology.

Joanna Moutafi has written the conference paper with Ian Newcombe, PSLís Product Development Director, and Adrian Furnham, a Professor of Psychology at University College London.

Entitled Personality and Intelligence in the Recruitment Process of Organisations, the paper highlights the findings from research conducted by PSL, involving over 600 graduates. The research examined the results achieved by the graduates in verbal and numerical reasoning tests and their simulated job performance in assessment centres.

Assessment centres provide a good indicator of job performance but they have their limitations, said Joanna Moutafi. Factors such as conscientiousness, which have a significant impact on job performance, are difficult to measure at an assessment centre. This paper highlights why organisations should combine assessment centres with other psychometric tests to give a more rounded picture of candidates.

Ian Newcombe added: This is more evidence showing that personality plays a strong part in the prediction of work-based performance, even in situations when the personality measures are administrated in unsupervised online situations.

According to Prof Furnham: This paper confirms many other studies which show that intelligence is the best overall single individual difference predictor of work productivity. It also points to the cost- effectiveness of using good, but simple, psychometric tests in selection.
