Psychometrics Day is a one-day course taught by psychologists for those interested in psychology and who wish to expand their knowledge of psychometric tools and their application in the coaching profession. The course is aimed at those with preliminary exposure to psychometrics, who want to learn instruments not previously applied to coaching, such as Schein Career Anchors ñ helpful in unearthing career drivers; Thomas Kilman ñ which helps identify conflict styles; and 16 PF ñ as powerful in ëTraitsí as MBTI is in ëTypesí.
Key highlights will include:
An introduction by the University of Leicesterís Dr. Alex Linley into personality and personality assessment, including ethics and professional practice, to help provide a framework for the ensuing discussions on individual instruments. Dr. Linley is former Chair of the European Network for Positive Psychology, editor of the international volume Positive Psychology in Practice, and Associate Editor of The Psychologist magazine.
A brief overview by Meyler Campbellís Anne Scoular of current psychometric tools including Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and FIRO-B.
A summary of the Hogan Dark Side, a unique instrument to examine the dark side of our personality.
A session on Schein Career Anchors, very helpful in unearthing oneís career drivers.
The Motivational Style Questionnaire (MSQ), led by Roland Tarleton of management consultancy, Getfeedback. Roland, who wrote ëThe Motivational Style Questionnaireí will look at how the MSQ can predict future performance by comparing the strength of motivational preferences with opportunities that exist within oneís current job and organisational culture.
An examination of Emotional Intelligence ñ a combination of the intelligence we have that helps us both know and manage ourselves well, and the intelligence we have that helps us understand, motivate and relate effectively to other people. The session will be led by John Cooper of John Cooper Associates, a thriving occupational psychology practice which has worked with some of the UKís leading companies. A former visiting lecturer at Bristol University on the MSc Organisational Psychology programme, John is currently a visiting reader at the University of Gloucestershire.
An introduction to the Thomas Kilman and 16 PF psychometric tools by Liane Hawthorne of OPP. Thomas Kilman is the leading instrument used to assess and learn about different conflict-handling styles and how these affect personal and group dynamics. The 16PF (16 Personality Factor) model defines our basic, underlying personality and assesses an individualís personality against 16 personality factors. OPP is Europeís second largest business psychology consultancy.
The day will be rounded off by an interactive Questions & Answers session with Professor Adrian Furnham of University College London who will review the dayís proceedings and his take on psychometrics and coaching. Professor Furnham is one of the UK’s leading organisational psychologists, the author of a number of books and a guest columnist in the Sunday Times.
Said Anne Scoular, Managing Director of Meyler Campbell:
ìMeasuring an individualís knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and personality traits is becoming a key tool in a coachís toolkit. Psychometrics today is providing a strong theoretical and scientific basis for coachingís application. Yet, while many have become proficient in tools such as the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), there are many more tools waiting to be used and applied within a coaching context. We are delighted to be putting on such a comprehensive and stimulating programme involving many of the leaders in the psychometrics field.î
Psychometrics Day is a one-day module of Psychology for Coaches, a university-style course taking place in March and April 2006 and which will provide participants everything they need to know at an introductory level about psychology and coaching.
Participants will learn how theories, such as Freud, behaviourism, cognitive, social and positive psychology can improve oneís coaching skills; how we differ as individuals and how tools from positive psychology can help one better understand clientís untapped strengths; knowledge of all the major psychometrics used in coaching; techniques for spotting and dealing with depression; and the latest thinking currently transforming psychology.
