The Training Camp is calling for a major review of holiday allowance in the UK, in order to create a happier and more skilled workforce, following a survey of 478 professionals. The move will ensure offices no longer suffer from eerie, half-staffed teams at Christmas.
Under the proposal from the Accelerated Learning specialist, employees would be allowed to carry over up to seven days of annual leave, providing that these days are used for job-specific training in the New Year. According to research carried out by The Training Camp, over 65% of professionals questioned would sign up to the scheme if offered by employers.
Most employees are forced to take all of their annual leave within a 12-month period, and must either relinquish those days or use them up the end of the holiday calendar. With most employees anxious to use up their allowance by the end of the year, this often results in firms being chronically understaffed in the build up to Christmas. By permitting these days to be used for training, employers can ensure that people no longer feel that theyíre forced to take time off at the end of the year.
ìSome firms can look like a ghost town on Fridays in December, so itís no wonder itís regarded as a quiet period, when it really doesnít need to be,î said Rob Chapman. ìOur research proved that people want to use their annual leave wisely. Rather than missing out on it entirely because of workplace pressure, they could be learning a new skill that will benefit their company.î
