CIPD/CMI study to reveal best ways of encouraging older workers to retire later

.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), will publish an in-depth benchmarking study on ageism and retirement on Monday 24th October 2005. The Creating a New Age for Older Workers report, based on a survey of more than 2,600 individuals and employers, will show:

that part-time working, more flexible pensions and grandparental leave are key to improving the participation rates of older workers,

the extent to which younger and older workers are discriminated against in the workplace,

that promotion prospects are greatly reduced when you are past 50,

that older workers are more productive than the rest of the workforce, but need to develop their IT skills. The report will also refute the claim that older workers are more costly and donít need employment rights,
the gap between peopleís perception of when they expect to retire and the reality.

The Chartered Management Institute and the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development gave a preview of the findings at the Labour Party conference, today, Monday, 26th September.
