August 2005 job creation index (JCI) figures released

50,311 positions created

Telecommunications lead the way on the Job Creation Index

Over 50,000 jobs were created across the UKís 21 key industries in August. Despite the traditional lull over the summer months many industries have been focusing on job creation and a number of sectors have created more jobs in August 2005 compared to August 2004. This month the telecommunications sector leads the way in job creation with a positive JCI of 769 followed closely by the consumer goods and manufacturing sector.

The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:

Augustís Front Runners
Telecommunications ñ Despite a recent downturn in job creation for the telecommunications sector, this month the industry is at the top of the index with a JCI of 769

Consumer goods manufacturing ñ Despite concerns on the high street manufacturers are still recruiting. This month the JCI for this sector is 609

Land and property ñ As the property market continues to fluctuate this sector focuses on job creation. This month 7430 jobs were created in this sector

Augustís Chasers
Insurance and pensions ñ The insurance and pension sector has suffered a downturn in job creation this month with the JCI dropping to -100

Chemicals and pharmaceuticals ñ The chemical and pharmaceutical sector drops to ñ97 on the job creation index

Richard MacMillan, managing director of Adecco UK and Ireland said: ìTraditionally recruitment over the summer months slows down but it is encouraging to see an increase from last month as we move towards the end of the holiday season. Overall job creation is down compared to August 2004 but some key industries have been forging ahead with recruiting including the telecommunications sector which has had a particularly strong month.î

Ray Murphy of Mandis commented, ìThe number of jobs created year to date and identified by the JCI reached 370,000 at the end of August. While this is 7% behind the corresponding figure for 2004 (401,000 jobs), the month of August was the fourth time this year that over 50,000 jobs were created, a feat managed only 3 times in 2004.î

The Mandis/Adecco Job Creation Index is the ongoing monthly tracker of UK jobs created across 21 industries in the UK that enables year on year monthly comparisons. This ëliveí data is gathered via research during each month into the employment intentions of 500 leading UK organisations, providing a key, up-to-date indicator on economic performance and confidence across the sectors. The monthly study is conducted by Mandis Business Intelligence and sponsored by Adecco, the UKís largest recruiter.
