Giving a unique insight into GCHQ’s work, a new interactive recruitment CD asks potential job applicants to sit in ’mission control’ and take on and stop a group of terrorists.
Involving arms and drugs smugglers, the interactive ’game’ poses a series of multiple-choice questions. The result - a newscaster reading one of three potential breaking news stories - depends on the answers given. If the participants get the correct outcome they become eligible to win a laptop.
Designed and developed in association with recruitment communications specialists TMP Worldwide Advertising & Communications (a division of Monster Worldwide), the game -- purely for fun -- gives players a flavour of the sort of work they would be involved in if they were to join GCHQ.
This CD-ROM marks a radical departure for the organisation. GCHQ has always been very secretive but has decided to open its doors to let people understand more about what it does. With TV programmes like the BBC’s Spooks creating a greater interest in working for Britain’s intelligence service, GCHQ is better positioning itself to capture an interested audience.
We needed to work with a company that could help us give potential recruits a flavour of how exciting and important it can be to work for GCHQ and TMP helped us to do this, said a spokesperson from GCHQ. In many ways, we are the ’ears of the nation’. Terrorism, drugs smuggling, illegal arms trading, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction -- if it’s a threat to British interests, people in high places will be looking to us to provide a picture of the evolving situation. This CD-ROM gives a real insight into the work, and what it’s like to be part of our team.
The recruitment game will be sent to people who register for the CDROM and brochure at
