Over 41,933 jobs have been created across the UKís 21 key industries. This month saw the highest job creation index for the Healthcare sector with a JCI of 1604. 2004 has been a bumper year for Healthcare but this month the job creation index rose to its highest yet. Key front-runners in October were also the Hospitality sector with over 6482 more jobs created than this time last year.
The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:
Octoberís Front Runners
Healthcare ñ The JCI figure for this sector has risen from 183 in September to 1604 in October. The most successful month for this sector in 2004
Hospitality ñ The Leisure and Hospitality sector sees a positive increase in the job creation index compared to last monthís figures. The JCI rose to 521 compared to 212 in September
Energy ñ The approaching Winter has seen the Energy sector JCI rise to 356, another positive increase for this sector in 2004
Transport and Distribution ñ As Christmas fast approaches, this sector is getting ready for the festive frenzy with the JCI figure for this sector rising to 243
Octoberís Chasers
Media, Advertising and Marketing ñ This sector has suffered a downturn in job creation in the past few months. October sees a continuation of this decline with the JCI at ñ100, the lowest figure seen in 2004
Insurance and Pensions ñ This sector continues to suffer in 2004 in line with the continued speculation about the security of this sector. The October JCI dropped to -100
Richard MacMillan, Managing Director of Adecco UK and Ireland said: ìThis month we have seen a positive increase in the job creation index across a number of key growth sectors such as Healthcare and Hospitality. The increase in these areas suggests positive growth above and beyond seasonal trends. These are both areas where Adecco branches are also seeing lots of enquiries.î
Ray Murphy of Mandis commented,81% of new jobs created in October were in the Service sector and, when taken together, Healthcare, Leisure & Hospitality, Retailing and Transport made up 62% of this total. By way of contrast just 19% of new jobs created during the month were in the Manufacturing area. This split between the major sectors is typical of the pattern seen over recent years and has important implications for the economy as well as for staff training and recruitment.
The Mandis/Adecco Job Creation Index is the ongoing monthly tracker of UK jobs created across 21 industries in the UK that enables year on year monthly comparisons. This ëliveí data is gathered via research during each month into the employment intentions of 500 leading UK organisations, providing a key, up-to-date indicator on economic performance and confidence across the sectors. The monthly study is conducted by Mandis Business Intelligence and sponsored by Adecco, the UKís largest recruiter.
