Northern Rock has set up working groups of senior staff to help implement its corporate social responsibility policy.

The UK-based mortgage bankís Community Report 2003 reveals that the groups have been created to look at ways of implementing the policy in areas such as governance and accountability, human rights, community involvement and the environment.

Each group will set targets covering the next two to three years, as well as longer term objectives.

The verified report - the companyís third - also outlines plans to launch a recruitment campaign this year to encourage more job applicants over the age of 50, and to extend flexible working arrangements.

The bank has increased the proportion of disabled staff in its workforce from 0.4 per cent two years ago to 3.5 per cent now. Women hold 52 per cent of managerial and executive posts.

Under the terms of its conversion from a building society to a bank in 1997, Northern Rock gives five per cent of its annual pre-tax profits to good causes.
