Workingmums.co.uk, the UK’s number one jobsite for professional working mums and flexible jobseekers is delighted to confirm MP Lynne Featherstone, parliamentary under secretary and Minister for Equalities as its keynote speaker at the inaugural Workingmums.co.uk Top Employer Awards to be held this year in October.
The Workingmums.co.uk Top Employer Awards event, which publicly recognises and celebrates the achievements of companies offering leading practices in flexible working, diversity and work life balance, is also giving organisations an additional three weeks to enter. The deadline for entries has been extended from 23 July 2010 to 13 August 2010. The awards identify employers who are progressive in their flexible working practices and proactive in seeking to assist working parents combine successful careers with being a parent.
Commenting on the awards, Ms Featherstone said:
“As a working mum myself, I know how hard it can be to balance the competing demands of family and work and how parents can be left feeling guilty about short-changing either their children or their employers. As a Minister I’m pleased to say that the Government is committed to making the workplace more family-friendly, for example by extending the right to request flexible working to all and introducing shared parental leave. But we can’t do this on our own – without support from businesses we’ll never be able to make real change happen and that support won’t come unless companies with family-friendly working practices share their ideas and successes with the wider world. That’s why awards such as this are so important, and I’m delighted to support Workingmums.co.uk in the work they do.”
Lynne Featherstone was elected as Member of Parliament for Hornsey and Wood Green in 2001. She served as the Liberal Democrat’s international development spokesperson in 2006, before moving on to their youth and equalities spokesperson in 2007.
Prior to that, in 1998, she was elected to Haringey Council (a position she held until 2006), and in 2000, she was elected to the London Assembly, where she chaired the Transport committee and served on the health and standards committees and the Metropolitan Police Authority.
Before becoming involved in politics, Lynne ran her own design company and was a strategic design consultant. In her spare time, she worked as a volunteer in the Royal Free Hospital.
Winners will be announced at an award ceremony being held at The Soho Hotel, London on 5th October 2010. Delegates will be given the opportunity to put questions directly to the Minister of Equalities and other members of the discussion panel including Andy Lake, Editor, Flexibility.co.uk; Jennifer Liston-Smith, My Family Care; Pip Dorkings from the Daycare Trust; and Gillian Nissim, Founder, Workingmums.co.uk at an interactive question and answer session following the awards ceremony.
