Energy savings equals money savings for UKís SMEs

Energyrethinking launches dedicated online resource for small businesses

energyrethinking, the community that helps its members rethink how they use energy to save money, today releases a brand new advice section for small business owners and employees (http://www.energyrethinking.org/at_work).

The section contains advice for employers and employees on making the workplace more energy efficient. It features four main sections: - Rethink & Save, Funding, The Bigger Picture and All in the News with blogs and stories from the world of business. Each section contains detailed information on ways to save energy, such as useful tips for the workplace, ways to obtain funding, regulations to be aware of and how current affairs can affect your energy saving.

“We believe that business can and must be a 'force for good,” said Neil Walmsley of Tomorrow’s Company, a UK based ‘think’ and ‘do’ tank and energyrethinking partner. “There are many ways a workplace can be energy efficient, sustainable, and most importantly, inspirational to its employees. From sustainable IT ideas to reducing waste during coffee breaks, energyrethinking highlights the most important issues for SMEs. By helping businesses become more sustainable, we believe they will be more successful in the future.”

Tomorrow’s Company has joined forces with the Institute of Directors (IoD), Europe's largest membership organisation for business leaders, to deliver expert advice for the website. “SMEs make up such an important part of the business community, but can struggle to follow energy efficient practices due to barriers such as lack of resources, or confusion around regulations. By providing this resource, energyrethinking hopes to make it easier for SMEs to save energy in the workplace, and change employee behaviour not only at work, but at home as well,” says Graeme Leach at the IoD, another energyrethinking partner.

Highlights of the site are expert advice from well known faces, including a video on how to save energy in the workplace starring TV presenter Neil Oliver. The video documents Neil’s visit to Herman Miller, a company who employ great innovative practices to make their workplace greener. Initiatives such as lights which detect both movement and the current amount of light present before operating, and waterless urinals, help this company be highly environmentally efficient, and the video shows how easy it is for SME’s to adopt similar practises.
