Workers Want to Move up the Food Chain

Professionals in the food industry say career progression is the most important factor in deciding to apply for a job

Professionals in the food industry say career progression is the most important factor in deciding to apply for a job, according to the latest survey by Leading Edge, IGDís development and networking forum for managers in the food and grocery industry.

Close to half the respondents (45.6%) rate career progression as the main reason for applying for jobs, above other factors such as challenging work, training and development opportunities or an effective graduate programme.

Over three quarters of respondents (79%) also say that opportunities for career progression will encourage them to stay with their current employer, ranking above feeling appreciated (72%) and money and perks (67%).

Leading Edge Business Development Manager Shanna Ritchie says the results reflect improved perceptions of career opportunities in the food and grocery industry. ìThe rapid pace of change and growth in the industry in the past few years provides previously unthought-of career opportunities.

ìThe old perception that jobs in food and grocery are simply about stocking shelves is dying rapidly, as the UKís best and brightest minds are attracted by the opportunities to progress,î she says.

Ritchie adds that for companies to attract and retain the best, most ambitious candidates, they need to give employees the skills to climb the ladder and develop networks across the industry.

ìThis includes making contacts, exchanging ideas at events and using online resources to create virtual networks. Leading Edge is uniquely positioned to develop skills, knowledge and networks for professionals in the food and grocery industry.î

This week Leading Edge launched its new website, www.leadingedge.igd.com which provides professionals across the food and grocery industry with an online resource to upskill and create virtual networks.

ìLeading Edge is creating an online community for food and grocery skills development. We are encouraging Leading Edge members to get involved and make the most of these opportunities,î concludes Ritchie.
