Work phone on par with iPhone for City jobs hunting

City workers now prepared to search for jobs on company phones

BlackBerry handsets are being used almost as frequently as iPhones by City workers in their job hunting, says Selby Jennings, the financial recruitment specialist.

Selby Jennings says that with BlackBerry handsets dominating the corporate mobile phone market, this means that many employees are now looking for jobs using their company mobile phones.

According to Selby Jennings, 1,620 candidates downloaded its new job search application onto an iPhone compared to 1,570 on a BlackBerry. The Selby Jennings app enables candidates to register for jobs within the financial services sector, including investment banks, hedge funds and insurances companies and to receive text alerts as soon as jobs come onto the market.

Comments Adam Buck, Managing Director of Selby Jennings: “The fact that so many people are deliberately browsing for jobs on their company mobile phones is indicative of how much risk employees are willing to take in order to further their careers.”

“With the recession many employees have abstained from changing jobs to avoid making themselves more vulnerable in the face of a redundancy, which can be very frustrating. But as the jobs market recovers, this has given them the confidence to get out and land that dream job.”

Selby Jennings says that the success of its job search application is part of the trend for jobseekers to increasingly look for jobs on their mobile phones, as well as on their computers, ensuring that they hear about jobs as soon as requirements arise.

Comments Adam Buck: “The City jobs market is a particularly fast paced environment where the speed of response can be a key factor in determining whether you get a job or not. This is even more relevant for junior positions where there is much more competition between applicants.”

“That said, there is also an obvious advantage in that it is much more discrete to browse jobs on your mobile phone than on your computer if you decide to do it at work. Internet usage on your work PC is also likely to be more tightly monitored than on your work phone.”

“However, ultimately, it is better to look for jobs on your own devices and at appropriate times – during a break at work or in the evenings at home on your PC.”
