National and Regional Trends
Robert Half Management Resources, the worldís leading provider of interim managers, today launches the inaugural quarterly research into the trends in interim management, ëInterim Britainí. The main finding from the July ñ September 2005 research highlights that only a quarter of interim mangers are female, a trend that is consistent in London, the South West and the North of England. However, women made up 50% of interims between the ages of 25-35, demonstrating that the ëfunnelí of women interim managers is strong and the tide is likely to turn in the next few years.
Nationally, only 28% of interim mangers were female
London ñ 26%
1. South West ñ 33%
2. North ñ 28%
However, 50% of interim managers between the ages of 25-35 were female
Tim Hird, Executive Director of Robert Half Management Resources said, ìInterim management is a career suited for individuals that want pass on their knowledge and experience to numerous organisations apolitically and the skills required suit both men and women equally. Women have yet to fully embrace interim management as a career but we suspect that future research will show evidence of increased of women embracing the profession.î
The results also highlighted that interim managers in general are getting younger.
Nationally two thirds (66%) of interim managers are between 35-55
Over a quarter (26%) are under the age of 35
Only 6% are over the age of 55
Hird continued, ìInterim managers are always very experienced practitioners who carry out a role usually below their level of expertise. This has led to a perception of interim managers being old and grey, but our research highlights that the average interim does not fulfil this category. This also emphasises another trend of interims being used in more diverse roles, not just for the senior powered roles but also throughout all levels of an organisation.
ìThe overall message from our research is that interim management has attracted women, especially those between the ages of 25-35, but there is still a long way to go before women represent an equal share of the market.î
