Welcoming the announcement yersterday that the government is going to crackdown on children’s nurseries that are failing to pay their staff the National Minimum Wage, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
Quality childcare requires a well paid and valued workforce. The government has invested a substantial amount in childcare but at the moment childcare employees earn less than most other workers in the education or care sectors and too many don’t even receive the minimum wage.
The TUC welcomes the commitment to make sure childcare workers are not being deprived of the minimum wage and urges the government to continue to work with unions and childcare providers to ensure that the childcare workforce benefit from decent wages that reflect the real value of their work.
The Department of Trade and Industry announced today that teams from HM Revenue and Customs are to visit childcare establishments in a drive to enforce the minimum wage. Government research shows that around one in three childcare establishments is not paying some workers the National Minimum Wage.
