TUC welcome for extra education years for teenagers

.

Commenting on the publication of the Department for Education and Skills Green Paper ëRaising the Participation Ageí, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

If the UK economy is to compete successfully with other countries around the globe and young people are to be given the best chance of succeeding in the world of work, it makes sense for teenagers to remain in education or high quality training until they are 18. We welcome the Governmentís bold proposals to ensure that all young people are given the opportunity to learn extra skills in school, college or through work-based training.

But these proposals must be backed by proper resources for the education sector to ensure that there is sufficient high quality provision that appeals to young people with a variety of interests. Employers are going to be important in making this vision a reality and the TUC looks forward to working with ministers on these proposals.
