This story highlights the general importance of getting the recruitment process right and avoiding damaging and discriminatory practices.
By 2010, only 20% of the labour market will be white, non-disabled men under 45. Employers increasingly need to build truly diverse workforces to achieve success. Promoting diversity and abiding by best practice will also promote inclusion in employment to the betterment of our society.
Employers do not put enough time and effort into this key area and there is an urgent need to provide greater training for those involved in recruitment.
It is worth remembering that good, non-discriminatory recruitment practices which fully embrace diversity are not just about staying within the law, they are also about recruiting from a representative and wide range of candidates which ultimately will benefit the organisation.
This case also indicates that people are becoming acutely aware of their rights, in particular when it comes to discrimination. As this topic becomes even more important, it is crucial for companies to be aware of the regulations involved and understand the risks of getting it wrong.
