TK Maxx shuns e-commerce for online recruitment

By Matthew Brown

Cut-price clothes store, TK Maxx, has launched its first web presence, but is unable to offer e-commerce through the site, because it sources its goods at such short notice.

The site instead acts as an information point for customers interested in the TX Maxx brand, and as a recruitment resource through which people can apply online for jobs with the retailer. TK Maxx recently opened its 100th store and plans a further 35 in 2002. It will also open a distribution centre in Stoke in March of this year, creating 800 jobs.

The site also features a store locator and a few examples of TK Maxx-style clothes. Created by new media agency, Work Zone, the site will not be promoted by the company, except in-store.

TK Maxx buys brand name products straight from the manufacturers, differentiating itself from grey market buyers, such as Tesco and Safeway, who buy excess inventory from third party suppliers. It buys thousands of new lines every week, taking advantage of late offers from suppliers looking to offload excess inventory.
