Theres no place like home for British workers

Many of the countryís workers would be more than happy to return to their roots if they were offered their dream job

According to a recent survey by totaljobs.com, one of the UKís leading recruitment websites, nearly half (45 per cent) of British workers hanker for home and itís the patriotic Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish who are most likely to go back to their roots.

A key driver for one in four is a desire to be closer to their family, while a further one in five feel that theyíd get a better quality of life. Rising house prices are also a influential factor and may well lead some to return home when the time is right. Nearly one in ten of respondents want to avoid the high house prices they are currently paying.

Many would also consider shifting location to a completely new area if their dream job came up (58 per cent). Management consultants are the most flexible when it comes to moving, with 76 per cent happy to move for the sake of their careers. On the contrary, secretaries and admin workers are passionate about staying put with over half of respondents saying they would not be prepared to relocate for their ideal position.

London proves to be the most popular destination with British workers as it offers such a diverse range of career opportunities. This is closely followed by the South East, North West and South West.

The survey also examined what makes a good employer and the key considerations that UK workers look for include development opportunities (24 per cent) followed by pay/salary (20 per cent), the company brand (15 per cent) and location (11 per cent).

The most sought after organisations to work for are:
1. Council/Local Government
2. NHS
3. Virgin
4. BBC
5. Tesco

Sophie Relf, head of marketing for totaljobs.com said; This research shows that while home is where the heart is for many UK employees, some of us are more flexible than others when it comes to moving home for the sake of our careers.

Itís also interesting to see how the public sector is now preferable to the private sector when it comes to that dream job.
