Theo Paphitis believes online innovators have ìunshackled the business worldî

The fast-paced world of commerce is a rapidly changing landscape, and, in recent years, the most significant shift has come courtesy of the Internet; a global platform that has, in a relatively short period of time, revolutionised the way in which the world communicates, trades, and does business.

This seismic shift has left some businesses, and indeed whole markets, in its wake while others have flourished. One sector that has, until recently, resisted the opportunity to exploit the Internet’s full potential and adapt its business model is the recruitment industry. However, with the introduction of online recruitment marketplaces like gatszu.com, where employers are encouraged to upload their vacancies and specify the fixed fee they are willing to pay a recruiter to place a candidate, the sector is finally evolving.

While many recruiters welcome this change, and see the opportunity that online recruitment marketplaces present – access to qualified vacancies without the need for cold calling or acceptance onto a PSL – others are reluctant to concede that the industry, like others, must embrace these innovative new platforms if it is to prosper.

Speaking to business website Smarta.com, Theo Paphitis encouraged company directors across all sectors to acknowledge how the Internet has altered the way in which the world does business: “The environment is changing very rapidly at the moment,” said Paphitis, star of the BBC’s Dragons’ Den. “This is partly because of the Internet, which opens up a vast world at the touch of a button. The amount of business being done on the web now is shifting the balance of power. The internet has unshackled the business world.”

Gatszu.com founder, Stuart Murray, is equally forthright in his belief that to move the recruitment industry forward, business owners must adapt: “The Internet has changed everything in recent years,” explained the online recruitment advocate. “However, the recruitment industry’s business model hasn’t altered to any significant degree for over half a century, and in this fast-changing world of online job boards and social networking it must evolve or it will begin to suffer. Online recruitment marketplaces present a real opportunity for recruiters to boost their revenue in the most time effective way, as they eliminate the need for business development. The vacancies are simply posted online, and all a recruiter has to do is find good candidates while providing a high level of service. Do that and they will thrive in this new online environment.”
