The workplace: A stressful place for candidates of Exec2Exec?

Executive job board www.exec2exec.com recently carried out a survey on all registered candidates regarding workplace stress

Executive job board www.exec2exec.com recently carried out a survey on all registered candidates regarding workplace stress.

With recent research suggesting that we spend most of lives stressed in one way or another, we were keen to discover the experiences of our registered candidates.

After receiving an overwhelming response it appeared that workplace stress was a major issue for both employees and businesses. Below are some of the comments that we received.

Iíve suffered from stress in my previous employment resulting in periods of insomnia and eventually several weeks sick leave in a row. Previous to this I hadnít had a sick day off work for 4 years.

Whilst workload and long hours were definitely a contributory factor, I think the most significant reason for my stress was being ëaccountable for the results of a department but not having the authority to manage the in the way I would likeí - in short being responsible but not in control. Mark

My view is that the main issue within the Company I worked for was a complete work overload. I personally left the Company on a compromise agreement for an quick exit as I was totally stressed out working normally 12 hours a day and driving 36,000 miles a year, this was still not enough to get the job done. Julie

I am in a role where I feel that no matter what I do, its never enough so undervalued comes high on my list. I also think that one of my major stresses is bullying in the workplace. Sarah

Although most of the comments were from people who had suffered from workplace stress we also received responses from the employerís perspective. One reader, Sally, stated:

It is now almost impossible to effectively performance manage employees as, no matter how sympathetically or professionally carried out by the line manager- that member of staff will get themselves signed off with ístressí almost immediately. This is a serious issue, which costs employers millions in terms of lost productivity, administrative costs and falsely claimed sick pay. Doctors seem happy to write a sick note upon request - seemingly as a cop out as everyone knows how to describe feelings of stress.

A process needs to be put in place to help deal with this huge problem and one which will also provide doctors with some measure of protection, as it is presumably for fear of accusations of misdiagnosis that doctors issue sick notes like confetti.

Workplace stress is seen as one of the biggest threats to the future health of employees.
