Over the last 30 years NASA has spent nearly $200 billion and it has cost the lives of 14 people during failed flights. NASA’s space industry has grown massively over the years and last month brought its Shuttle Programme to an end but do you realise how significant the UK’s Space Industry is?
In the UK, growth of the space industry has continued to grow at 9% a year in the past decade. The space industry provides 68,000 jobs to highly skilled people and is now estimated to be worth £5.6 billion a year. In comparison to America the UK has no manned space programmes but is now, however, a world leader in satellite technology, components and remote sensing. The budget set for the new UK Space Agency 2011 is a staggering £206 million, however, it is only a fraction of other countries such a Germany and France’s predicted figures.
The Space industry is continually growing and creating more and more jobs every year. In today’s turbulent global economy this is great news for the UK and for people interested in working in the Space sector it provides them the opportunity to help further research and continue to discover more about the universe in which we live.
Despite the massive drawback in 1986 when seven astronauts lost their lives aboard the Challenger shuttle it has been one of the only setbacks they have had to face during their 30 years’ history. With the agency expecting the Space sector to grow from £160 billion in 2008 to £400 billion in 2030 the industry is set to rocket creating more than 100,000 jobs and aims to capture at least 10% of this market.
In relation to recruitment, the space industry has repeatedly grown in size every year as has the recruitment industry. More jobs are becoming available to the market for people in the space industry; it has allowed a huge growth in the sector and generated millions of pounds worth of business to suppliers of all shapes and sizes.
Despite the ongoing economic doom and gloom, the UK’s strength in technology and innovation shines on across a broad range of industries including Space. What can you offer the industry and could it be your route to future business growth?
