The best-paying jobs in the UK

If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to get a higher paid job then look no further.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to get a higher paid job then look no further.

The Office for National Statistics in the UK has released the list of the best paying jobs in the UK for the past year.

The list is based on average salary for the role and includes only those jobs where set salaries are paid (i.e. no celebrities or sports stars who earn money from endorsements as well and no self-employed entrepreneurs).

1)     CEO. The Chief Executive Officer of a company in the UK will earn on average more than anyone else in the country per year. The salary rate ranges from £44,764 to £137,623. The CEO of any company is the person who is ultimately responsible for everything and everyone, including the success of the business as a whole. Although there are no specific qualifications required for the role, it is only ever given to those who have many years’ experience in learning the industry, heading up teams and solving problems as well as proven success at increasing profits and expanding business.

2)     Pilot/Flight engineer. The average salary for a pilot is £78,736, with the amount ranging from just under £60k to around £95k. The qualifications required to train as a pilot are reasonably few – five GCSE’s and two A Levels are usually enough – but the depth of training is huge. Pilots must rack up over 1,500 hours of flying minimum before they can even apply to pilot a commercial aircraft, and the course fees aren’t cheap either, with the average 18 month course leaving you £60,000 out of pocket.

3)     Medical practitioners. The pay range here is vast, with some GPs, surgeons, consultants and other medical professionals earning as little as £28,630. The higher end of the scale makes this job more worthwhile however, at £135,432, making the average wage over £70k. Long years of training and the life-or- death nature of the job more than justify the money.

4)     Sales/Marketing directors. Usually just beneath the CEO come the department directors, and marketing and sales are where the profit comes from. You can expect a starting salary of around £30k with the opportunity to work up to £106,315 in the UK. Although there are no required qualifications the role usually goes to someone with a combination of masses of experience and a qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

5)     Directors of IT/Telecommunications. The average yearly salary for a director of IT or telecommunications is £63,622. As IT is a relatively new resource there are currently far more high level roles than there are qualified people to fill them, meaning those who reach the top of the ladder can command a higher salary than in other industries.

Matt Comley, Commerical Director at Director Appointments who specialise in Sales Director jobs talks about the recruitment for such positions;

“With Director Appointments, we saw a gap in the market. There are many more general recruitment sites out there but not too many that specialise in recruiting senior employees for board level jobs such as sales directors and company chief executives. It’s not always easy to know where to look for this kind of role and we aim to make this easier for professionals and give them the ‘go-to’ place.”
