People all over the country are being challenged to learn a new skill for National Learning at Work Day 2009 (14 May). The Campaign for Learning, coordinators of the Day, has launched the Hands On Skills Challenge to encourage everyone to learn at least one of five skills that they can use both at work and in everyday life. To enter the challenge, you will need to log onto www.campaignforlearning.org.uk/skillschallenge. The Challenge runs until 19 June and everyone who enters will receive a free booklet on how to be a better learner and be put into a free draw to win a Nintendo DS with a Brain Training Game. Full terms and conditions can be found on the website.
Hundreds of organisations are taking part in this yearís Learning at Work Day, which is part of Adult Learnersí Week, including Virgin Media, Flybe and WHSmith. There will be thousands of opportunities for employees to learn something new and brush up on their skills. Companies are running sessions on topics such as leadership, languages, wellbeing and IT; mini tests to check out English and maths skills; and exhibitions to highlight courses and learning opportunities.
The Campaign for Learning has organised special national activities to celebrate this yearís Day. As well as the Hands On Skills Challenge, which is supported by Get On, people can enter for the Skills Shorts Competition – a competition to find the most entertaining short film about learning in the workplace.
Julia Wright, head of marketing and communications at the Campaign for Learning said, ëWe hope people will use Learning at Work Day to reflect on the skills they have and the skills they need – and have a go at learning something new. The Hands On Skills Challenge features five skills that are extremely useful to have for both work and home life and can help people get the results they need quickly and with less effort.í
