Ability tests from SHL, the FTSE-listed specialist in objective assessment, are being used by EMTEC, a provider of training services, to filter the best candidates for apprenticeships in the motor industry. So far this year, over 3,200 candidates have already been assessed using SHL tests.
Every year, approximately 17,000 young people apply for places on apprenticeship programmes delivered by EMTEC, which is part of the Carter & Carter Group Plc, a major provider of outsource support services and learning services to large corporate organisations. The sifting of all these candidates has to be quick and effective, as demanded by the pressure of the fast-paced automotive industry.
EMTEC was already using ability tests at the initial stage of the assessment process, but it needed to update its procedure.
Our recruitment process needed a more professional and modern approach, explains Steve Fryer, EMTEC National Recruitment Manager. We wanted our tests to reflect the companyís image of excellence.
EMTEC also needed to be able to distinguish between verbal and numerical abilities to know which position would be most suitable for each candidate. The existing tests were unable to provide this information. The new tests provided by SHL, not only effectively measure and differentiate between these two abilities, but also add an assessment of the applicantís mechanical reasoning abilities; a crucial aspect in many positions. Equally importantly, SHL was able to provide EMTEC with specific up-to-date norm groups for each of its tests.
Steve Fryer continues:
All tests provided by SHL are EMTEC branded, helping to underline the professionalism of our company, which is a key issue for us. We have already invited 10,000 applicants to take a test at one of our assessment centres. So far we have assessed over 5,000 of these. Every year we find that a significant proportion of applicants drop out before attending assessment centres. This is actually useful, as it identifies those candidates who are truly motivated and committed.
We are also able to provide all applicants with feedback, thanks to SHL training. We are extremely satisfied with the whole process and intend to carry on using the tests. All the materials provided by SHL are very well received and we expect to see this best practice in selection translated into a reduction of early leavers from our apprenticeship courses, concludes Fryer.
Paul Levett, SHL Head of Product & Training, adds: By assessing the applicantís abilities at an initial stage, EMTEC is making sure it doesnít waste time and money on the wrong applicants. On top of that, the tests certify the candidates have what it takes for the apprenticeships according to objective and scientific criteria, while attesting to EMTECís image of best practice and professionalism.
