Over 50,000 jobs were created across the UKís 21 key industries in September. A number of sectors have surged ahead with recruitment and the overall job creation has risen by nearly 28,000 jobs compared to September 2004. This month the technology sector leads the way in job creation with a positive JCI of 3134, a significant accomplishment with 15 out of the 21 sectors also seeing an increase in job creation.
The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:
Septemberís Front Runners
Technology ñ This sector rises to the top of the job creation index this month with a positive JCI of 3134
Transport and distribution ñ One of the steadiest sectors in terms of job creation, the transport and distribution industry continues to see another positive month with a JCI of 2361
Leisure and recreation ñ This month nearly 7500 jobs were created in the leisure and recreation sector marking a significant up turn for this industry
Septemberís Chasers
Telecommunications ñ This sector has recently seen a couple of strong months for job creation but job creation in September sees a downturn with the JCI dropping to -86
Finance and banking ñ Despite a general increase in job creation for this sector in 2005, the recruitment drive begins to slow down in September with the JCI dropping to -98
Richard MacMillan, managing director of Adecco UK and Ireland said: ìIt is positive to see that the overall job creation for September is up significantly compared to this time last year. The figures are encouraging and show that despite general concerns about high street consumer spending, many sectors are still creating vacancies and growing. Even those traditionally at the bottom of the index, like media and marketing, have showed signs of picking up this month.î
Nicholas Eggington of Mandis commented, ìThe number of jobs created across the 21 key sectors continues to grow this month. The overall JCI has risen by 121 per cent with 27,647 jobs created compared to September 2004 marking a significant growth in 2005.î
The Mandis/Adecco Job Creation Index is the ongoing monthly tracker of UK jobs created across 21 industries in the UK that enables year on year monthly comparisons. This ëliveí data is gathered via research during each month into the employment intentions of 500 leading UK organisations, providing a key, up-to-date indicator on economic performance and confidence across the sectors. The monthly study is conducted by Mandis Business Intelligence and sponsored by Adecco, the UKís largest recruiter.
