Scotsman.com to launch an exciting new site on Scottish heritage and culture

designed to plug a gap in the online market between amateur and academic history sites

Scotsman.com, one of Britainís biggest news websites, on Monday will launch an exciting new site on Scottish heritage and culture - designed to plug a gap in the online market between amateur and academic history sites.

The Heritage site is a living, breathing guide to both the past you did not know and to how it connects to your life today. As well as containing a broad-based review of major moments in Scotlandís history, the site is rich with feature-length content that is informative, provocative and entertaining.

The website - www.heritage.scotsman.com - includes news, features and a robust list of Scotlandís cultural events, creatively written and updated daily. It offers a serious and light-hearted view of the countryís colourful past.

Alistair Brown, General Manager, scotsman.com, said: ìthe new heritage site connects historical events to the life of modern day Scots. It brings history to life and at an important time in the development of Scotland, celebrates the contribution Scots have made to society, culture, education and science. The editorial team and their research are unearthing some amazing storiesî.

Scottish heritage and culture was identified in research as a subject that appealed to scotsman.com readers, particularly in North America and Australia, as well as Britain. A team of journalists with more than 70 yearsí experience are working with Scotlandís historical and cultural groups, academics and authors to develop compelling stories on subjects relevant to the nationís past and present.

The site offers picture- and graphic-rich articles on great Scots, historic places, myths and traditions. In addition, readers can use interactive maps to display the where and when behind the stories and watch historic film clips from a video archive.

Will Springer, Deputy Editor (Content), describes his approach to presenting the website: Picture yourself on an excursion across Scotland. You will visit castles, modern architecture, lochs and hills. You will read about Scots traditions, the bright and brilliant of todayís people, and discover the truth behind fascinating mysteries. It will be a fun and interesting journey each time you visit the site.

Scotsman.com is among the top UK newspaper websites. Audited figures from January indicate the site received 20.5 million page impressions, a 33 per cent increase year-on-year, and 3.1 million unique users, a 38 per cent rise from January 2004.
