More exhibitors, more practical advice and a brand new interactive website. These are just some of the reasons why Scotland's Careers and Jobs Fair, now in its thirtieth year, remains the biggest and best-attended careers fair in Scotland.
The 2008 careers fairs are set to roll up at the SECC, in Glasgow from Saturday 19 - Monday 21 January before moving on to the Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 of March.
Chris Jarvis of Jarvis Exhibitions, the man behind the organisation and running of the Fairs said:
I am really excited about the new elements we are introducing at the 2008 fairs. We will have some of the biggest names in recruitment and training exhibiting alongside some of the country's biggest names such as Tesco and the Royal Navy.
We are gearing up to cater for over 30,000 visitors at the Fairs. Whether someone is looking for advice on specific career options, training or learning opportunities or if they simply want to meet a range of representatives from the 100 plus organisations exhibiting, they will find it all under one roof.
The Edinburgh Fair returns to the capital for a second time, after a ten-year gap and will have at least 500 live vacancies and around 100 exhibitors. Chris Jarvis again:
We were delighted with the numbers of visitors last time and all the signs are that in 2008 we will smash last year's attendance records with over 7000 visitors.
The Fair in Glasgow is widely regarded as 'the' Scottish careers event of the year, consistently attracting in excess of 25,000 visitors over the three days. Its dominance was confirmed earlier this year when Careers Scotland chose to merge the West of Scotland leg of its own national Jobs Fair with the Glasgow event.
As part of its biggest ever presence at the event, Careers Scotland will run a series of seminars and training events in a dedicated Careers-Scotland section, as well as offering practical advice at its popular CV clinics from its Guidance Zone.
Danny Logue, acting director of Careers Scotland said:
Our Jobs Fair is primarily aimed at school-leavers and so by combining the events, school trips can get the best possible experience and the most useful information in only one trip.
Our expanded presence will also feature a Guidance Zone, where all job-seekers are able to get careers advice, have their CV appraised, revise their interview technique or simply have a careers-focussed chat with our highly trained staff.
For the first time, the Uniformed Services Partnership, an organisation set up to promote recruitment, diversity and equality in its partner organisations, will open its own 'careers village'. Representatives from Strathclyde Police, the Scottish Prison Service, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, the Army, British Transport Police, the Royal Navy, RAF and the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency will be on hand to highlight career opportunities within these organisations.
The Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust will run demonstrations of the skills needed for a career in the electrical engineering industry at both the Glasgow and Edinburgh Fairs. The Trust will use the Glasgow Careers Fair as the showcase for the final of its Electrotechnical Modern Apprenticeship - Best Apprentice in Scotland awards.
Scotland's Careers and Jobs Fair has maintained its leading position by continually refreshing what it offers job seekers and exhibitors alike. This year is no different with a new interactive website carrying details of the Careers Fairs and exhibitors, Chris Jarvis said:
Our brand new website dovetails with our events across the country. Now groups and individuals can skip the queues by pre-registering online. The Careers Planning Centre means that visitors can keep up to date with the latest information on who will be exhibiting at the Fairs and find out about the full range of support available to them.
