Reputation Is Crucial For Public Sector Recruitment

Public sector bodies must cultivate reputations to rival their private sector equivalents if they are going to realistically challenge them in the recruitment of the best staff

Public sector bodies must cultivate
reputations to rival their private sector equivalents if they are going to
realistically challenge them in the recruitment of the best staff.

Catherine Wilson, the head of personnel at Northampton Borough Council, said
that those public sector organisations that have worked hard at removing the
old perception of working for the state are now reaping the
benefits.

She was speaking at a live discussion on recruitment for public sector housing bodies with other industry professionals,
hosted by The Guardian newspaper, which also saw contributions from private
sector representatives and recruitment specialists.

Many public sector organisations have worked hard to remove the old
perception of what it is to work in the public sector hence achieving good
employer status, and we need to work hard to sustain and improve this,
she explained.

She added that the use of social media and online recruitment methods would also be integral to snagging the best staff in the coming years.
Northampton Council, she explained, had already set up its own online recruitment portal for such purposes. She said the site also links up with
Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages to make sure that it reaches as many
potential candidates as possible.
