Remploy announces Leading The Way Award Winners

.

Remployís Leading the Way awards, the UKís longest-running and most prestigious disability employment awards, have recognised organisations and individuals from across the UK for their outstanding work in supporting, developing and employing disabled people.

Now in their tenth year, the 2006 Leading the Way awards were presented at a gala ceremony at The Landmark in London on 22 November 2006. Celebrating with the winners were Anne McGuire MP, Minister for Disabled People and guest speaker John Spence OBE, a high profile financier who is himself blind and a former director of Lloyds TSB.

Ade Adepitan MBE, a paralympic basketball medal winner, famed for his appearances as the wheelchair dancer in BBC Oneís programme links, presented the awards. Nominations were invited from organisations of all sizes, from small businesses employing less than 50 people, to national, multi-site corporations. A special learning award was also presented, along with individual awards for business people, Jobcentre Plus employees and disabled employees that make outstanding contributions in the workplace.

The 2006 Leading the Way organisational winners are:

Small business award: Pack-It Group, a mailing and distribution company based in Cardiff

Medium business award: Jobs@Pertemps, which provides staff for the National Grid call centre in Gloucester

Large business award: Leicestershire County Council

Corporate award: Royal Bank of Scotland

Learning award: Royal National College for the Blind

Special commendations were also given to BT, which won the corporate award in 2005, and Sheffield Homes, which manages Sheffield City Councilís homes.

Remploy is the UKís leading provider of employment services for people with disabilities and health conditions, and the coveted Leading the Way awards provide a credible endorsement of organisations which are committed to diversity and inclusion.

Remployís Chief Executive, Bob Warner said: ìIt is a privilege to applaud those organisations and individuals that go the extra mile in the development and employment of disabled people. This year, especially so, as we are celebrating our tenth year of Leading the Way.

ìBy 2010, Remploy will be finding 20,000 jobs for disabled people in mainstream employment but none of it would be possible without the support of the employers and individuals that weíre recognising today. Leading the Way winners appreciate the abilities that disabled people can offer in the workplace and share Remployís vision of enabling disabled people to lead fulfilling lives through employment.î
