Carlton Resource Solutions (Carlton) today reports an increase in demand for temporary workers in the first quarter of 2010. The number of businesses employing temporary staff has increased by around 35%, compared to the first quarter of last year. Director of Carlton, Kevin Riley says that this is a clear indication that the business market is improving:
“We’ve noticed an increasing number of oil and gas businesses employing temporary and contract workers since the beginning of the year. This is mainly due to the market improving; companies are regaining financial strength, winning more work and as a result, requiring additional staff. Whilst reports indicate that we have emerged from the recession, many firms still remain cautious and view temporary workers as a viable option to allow them to deliver work required, without employing staff on permanent contracts. This way, should there be any changes in the economy; businesses can adapt their staffing levels accordingly.
“Temporary workers can provide the required skills for a business on a flexible basis and can be available at short notice. Therefore, they provide the ideal solution to bridge the gap for companies looking to staff up for short-term projects, or to cover holidays of key personnel.
“The recent disruption caused by the volcano eruption in Iceland has led to some businesses being left with members of staff being stranded overseas. These individuals may have already had one to two weeks holiday from work and during this time, colleagues will have been covering any essential tasks on their behalf. However, for companies beginning to feel the strain in covering the additional time required for staff to get back to work, due to the flight disruptions, employing workers on a temporary basis could be the solution to keep their business going, until permanent members of staff get back to work.”
