REC welcomes DTI Success At Work consultation

The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) welcomes the Governmentís response to the consultation on rights and responsibilities within the UK labour market

The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) welcomes the Governmentís response to the consultation on rights and responsibilities within the UK labour market. Based on these findings the DTI has launched a new ëSuccess at Workí consultation, to look at measures to vulnerable workers who are most at risk of exploitation on the margins of the labour market.

Todayís announcement that the current framework and coverage of employment rights is balanced and meets the labour marketís needs echoes the evidence that REC presented in its submission to the original consultation. For some time the REC has been calling for greater enforcement of existing regulation rather than more red tape for UK business.

The proposal to look at the most vulnerable workers and target new legislation to prevent abuse is a positive step and is welcomed by the legitimate agencies that form RECís membership.

Commenting on the consultation Gareth Osborne, managing director, REC said: ìThere is a recognition and acceptance in Government that vulnerable workers need adequate protection. REC has been lobbying for a review of the regulatory regime governing the recruitment industry for some time. We will continue to work with the DTI to look at innovative solutions to this ongoing issue.î

ìREC strongly believes that the current balance of legislation and labour market flexibility is appropriateî, said Osborne. ìTodayís decision to maintain this and not constrain UK business with unnecessary red tape vindicates this view. This is the right outcome for the economy, the workforce and for business.î

REC will be meeting the DTI later today to discuss the consultation in more depth.
