With public expenditure cuts set to impact on the already fragile jobs market in Scotland, it is crucial to avoid the kind of knee-jerk staffing cuts that would not only impact on employment opportunities but would also jeopardise front line services.
This word of caution from REC Scotland follows recent confirmation that unemployment in Scotland was up 16,000 in the past quarter.
Commenting on the latest figures, Lisa Boutineau, Director of REC Scotland, said:
“With over 30 per cent of workers employed in public administration, education and health, the squeeze on public expenditure could cloud the outlook for the Scottish jobs market. Public bodies will need to meet the challenge of delivering efficiencies whilst maintaining front line services. Solutions may include the use of skilled contract and interim staff to provide support and expertise when required. Flexible staffing arrangements must be at the heart of cost-effective resourcing models and will provide opportunities for workers.”
The REC has launched a public sector resourcing campaign to highlight the fundamental changes needed in the delivery of public services. For more information go to www.rec.uk.com/resourcing
