When the response time requirements, size and budgets of your business change, so must your learning model. William Ward was part of the e-learning team who changed e-learning at Cable and Wireless to a rapid model. Now an independent consultant, he recently talked to Kineo about how rapid e-learning, including Kineoís services, has delivered benefits at Cable and Wireless.
In Kineoís latest podcast, William Ward, formerly Learning Technology Manager at Cable and Wireless, and now independent consultant, explains why Cable and Wireless moved into a rapid development model: ìThe key challenge with bespoke e-learning was that it took too longÖwith rapid development, the cost savings are significant, youíre not paying bespoke prices anymore. But even more important is the response timeÖthe speed of implementation is amazing - you donít have to wait three months or four months, with rapid development you can get stuff out in three weeks.î
Ward agreed with Kineoís view that while authoring tools are critical to achieving these benefits, the whole development process must be re-examined, including how you work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). A key benefit in Cable and Wireless of rapid development has been the involvement of SMEs more directly in the process, supported by the e-learning team. This can make SMEs your most powerful champions: ìThat part of the business owns the learningÖthey will encourage people to do it more than you ever could in LandD or HR, so itís a real winner,î Ward explained.
Of Kineoís recent rapid e-learning work with Cable and Wireless, Ward described it as ìPhase 2 of learning technologyÖitís much more exciting [than catalogue driven content], much more into performance support and rapid developmentÖ Öat the end of the day itís about increasing performance, and what we need to do in the learning industry is learn how to use these tools in a constructive way. Itís the likes of Kineo, and there arenít that many others out there, who can grab hold of these new tools, and nurture them in an organisation and get them embedded in the way of working and learning.î
