The Queen is No 1 when it comes to leadership skills and could even give most famous managers a few tips, according to learndirect business figures released today. Her Majesty beat off stiff competition from billionaire entrepreneur Donald Trump, American Presidential candidate Hilary Clinton and football manager Alex Ferguson to scoop the title of Top of the Leaders in the survey.
But the rest of us donít measure up quite as well. Three quarters of us think we make good leaders but only just over half of us have ever had any leadership training. And while women think communication skills are the most important qualities a business leader needs, men believe being a great motivator is key.
A massive nine out of ten people agree good leadership is essential for business success but the reality is a third of office workers in the UK donít feel their bosses are good managers.
And since more than half of the country thinks great leaders are made, not born, we need to get into training if we want to become good managers. After all even Her Majesty needed the on-the-job training when she was first crowned.
Kirstie Donnelly, of learndirect, said: ìPositive leadership skills are critical to the success of a business. Itís imperative that whatever the industry, leadership training is implemented as a way of ensuring owner managers are equipped to face the challenges of running a company. They can also use training as a way of developing their workforce to grow and retain talent.î
But if being the perfect leader seems too daunting a task, donít worry there is help out there. Learndirect business series of three The Apprentice training DVDs can offer helpful hints on how to be a good manager and train up your staff.
