Over 4,000 prison staff have been trained in the first year that their union, the POA (Professional Trades Union for Prison, Correctional, and Secure Psychiatric Workers) set up learning centres around the UK. Today (Thursday 11th October), Liz Smith, Director of unionlearn (the TUC's education and skills organisation), will speak at the POA's Union Learning Representatives Conference in Wakefield. She will outline the impressive track record of unions since 1998 in becoming a key force in the world of learning and skills. Liz Smith will also use the event to set out the skills challenge for the Government and the UK in the next decade and map out the union contribution to tackling the skills crisis.
Liz Smith, unionlearn Director said: The POA has done fantastic work in establishing learning centres, but have also achieved an impressive 4,000 learners in the first year of their new project. These people have returned to learning and taken that first important step towards increasing their skills.
And that's a great achievement for them, their families, and their workplaces.
POA members work in some of the most critical and highly challenging jobs and they deserve support in improving their working lives.
