People skills 'key ' to bagging IT jobs

Possessing interpersonal skills is essential for jobseekers looking to gain positions in IT management, a new survey has discovered

Possessing interpersonal skills is essential for jobseekers looking to gain positions in IT management, a new survey has discovered.

Knowledge of technicalities and intellectual weight, while being a requirement for any IT manager, was not deemed enough for somebody to make it in a managerial role by 94 per cent of directors polled by recruitment firm Hays.

Contractor UK reported that the capability to communicate IT issues to those barely acquainted with the subject was also highly valued by the directors.

You need a proven track record and be up to date with the direction of technology, but you need to think strategically, give clear direction and engage with people, commented James Lloyd Townshend, managing director of Hays.

This week, mobile phone firm 3 UK pointed out how technology such as laptops, instant messengers and mobile phones have provided flexibility and a changing working landscape for employees.

All this technology that should serve relationships, says ClickAJob Marketing Manager Anders Jensen, not the other way around.

Sure communication is important, but it's the quality of that communication that counts - how quickly and easily co-workers can perceive and understand whatever is being said.

So it's not just IT people who need to express themselves effectively, it's anyone who aspires to a serious management role, he continues.

After all, if the boss can't say it right, how is it ever going to get done right?
