UK employers from a wide range of industries have submitted over one hundred entries for the first ever annual Local Employment Partnership (LEP) Awards.
The awards recognise outstanding contributions made by employers, employees and partners involved in LEPs - the Governmentís new partnership approach to help long-term benefit claimants back into work.
With nominations now closed, submissions have been received from a diverse range of employers from both major business and small local firms. British Gas, Manchester City Council, Travelodge, HSBC and local businesses are among those competing for awards in six categories, which include best practice in recruitment, overcoming barriers to employment and best career progression.
Stephen Timms, Minister for Employment and Welfare Reform, said:
ìWeíre delighted that such a large number of employers have chosen to share their stories of Local Employment Partnership success. Through the LEP Awards, we want to showcase those employers who go the extra mile to help disadvantaged people into work, as well as celebrating the personal achievements of employees whose lives are being transformed through the scheme.î
Short listed entrants will be announced over the coming weeks, following review by the judging panel.
Chaired by Stephen Timms, the panel is drawn from the private and public sector and includes:
- John Cridland, Deputy Director General CBI;
- Chris Humphries, Chief Executive, Commission for Employment and Skills;
- Frances OíGrady, Deputy General Secretary TUC;
- David Lammy, Minister for Skills;
- Jackie Orme, Chief Executive, CIPD;
- Helen Reynolds, Acting Chief Executive, Recruitment and Employment Federation.
Winners will be announced at an inaugural Awards presentation ceremony at the Oval in London on 1 July.
