According to a survey of 3,500 professionals conducted by Antal Russia, the specialist recruitment company, in February 2014, only 25% of middle and senior managers benefit from flexible working. While in the UK, a new law is about to come into force giving all employees the right to request flexible working, in Russia this issue is far from being considered.
Only 29% of CEOs said that their workday is not regulated by a strict timeframe. 23% of middle managers and 25% of specialists reported that they determine their working hours themselves.
Most employers agree that flexible working can be implemented if the nature and demands of the work allow it, and the interests of both the employees and the company are taken into account.
Flexible working is more often introduced in the fields of IT (30%) and sales (30%), followed by marketing (26%), HR (23%) and finance (22%). At the other end of the scale, 15% of professionals in the field of production and 13% in construction and development have access to flexible working.
It is worth mentioning that flexible working is an effective motivational tool. The survey results show that 65% of respondents consider flexible working very important when changing job.
"In Europe flexible working is much more widespread than in Russia. According to numerous studies, the employees of companies that have implemented flexible working say that it allows them to work more productively and at the same time to maintain work-life balance. In Russia employers are still hesitant to actively use this tool. Many of them fear that flexible working may cause lack of coordination among employees, and as a result, hurt business," says Michael Germershausen, Managing Director Eastern Europe, FiveTen Antal JSC.
