Over 58,000 jobs were created across the UKís 21 key industries in November 2007. This figure is up by an impressive 54 per cent when compared to job creation in November 2006.
The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:
Novemberís Front Runners
Printing and paper ñ An outstanding month for this sector with a JCI score of 3710 and a consecutive month in one of the top three JCI positions
Health and Social Care ñ This sector is second in the JCI table largely as a result of a 1 billion scheme to build the largest biomedical campus in Europe by Addenbrookes Hospital
Industrials, engineering and materials ñ A good month for this sector due to more than 1,500 new jobs being announced by Able UK Limited
Novemberís Chasers
Media, marketing and publishing ñ After a strong JCI score last month of 264 November was a poor month for this sector with a JCI score of ñ79
Retailing and Wholesaling ñ The second lowest JCI score of ñ39. The second month in a row this sector has scored a negative JCI score
Ren Schuster, CEO Adecco Group, UK & Ireland, said, ìThis has been another strong month as we near the end of the year with over 58,000 new job creations. It was interesting to see that levels of job creation have showed no sign of slowing despite the common misconception that jobs are less readily available around Christmas. It is encouraging to see such sectors as building and construction continue to create large a proportion of the total jobs, in November alone there was 6000 job creations in this sector.ì
Philip Arnold, director of Mandis commented: ìThis monthís increase of 54% builds upon the 31% rise in October 2007, highlighting the positive increase in job creation despite the current concerns with the credit crunch. Sectors such as printing and paper registered an increase of over 3,700%. This equated to 381 new jobs created, up from 10 in November 2006. This was almost solely due to announcements by three companies; the printing chain Printing.com, Dorchester based Friary Press which is about to relocate to Frome and BGP, which prints magazines such as Private Eye and The Big Issue.î
The Mandis / Adecco Job Creation Index is the ongoing monthly tracker of UK jobs created across 21 industries in the UK that enables year on year monthly comparisons. This ëliveí data is gathered via research during each month into the employment intentions of a representative sample of over 2000 UK organisations, providing a key, up-to-date indicator on economic performance and confidence across the sectors. The monthly study is conducted by Mandis Business Intelligence and sponsored by Adecco, the UKís largest recruiter.
