Nearly 57,000 jobs were created across the UK’s 21 key industries in November. This month the overall job creation has increased by 16 per cent in comparison to November 2004. A number of key sectors that have struggled throughout the year have come out on top this month, for example, the media and marketing sector leads the way in job creation in November, the first time this sector has been a front-runner on the job creation index in 2005.
The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:
November’s Front Runners
Media and marketing - 2005 has so far been a slow year in terms of job creation growth for the media and marketing industry but this month the sector leads the way on the index with a positive JCI of 1120
Retail and wholesaling - As the festive season draws closer this sector gears up for the Christmas rush by increasing job creation. This month 26,054 jobs will be created in this industry
Industrial and engineering - This month the industrial and engineering sector has a positive JCI of 863
November’s Chasers
Energy and utilities - Concerns for an energy shortage this winter is reflected in the decline in job creation for this sector. This month the JCI drops to -792
Telecommunications - After a strong performance last month, the telecommunications sector drops to -84 on the job creation index
Richard Macmillan, managing director of Adecco UK and Ireland said: It is encouraging to see an overall rise in job creation compared to November 2004. Whilst we expect to see a last minute Christmas rush in the retail sector; its also interesting to see that the sectors such as media and marketing, that have been slow to recruit this year, have re-emerged as strong front runners in terms of job creation.
Nicholas Eggington of Mandis commented, In spite of some of the more gloomy predictions about the economy, the Job Creation Index for November shows an overall increase of 16 per cent in the number of new jobs being announced compared with November last year, helped along by media, marketing and publishing and industrials, engineering and materials processing. Retailing traditionally prospers in the run-up to Christmas (46% of the total this year) but even so, the total number of new jobs announced in November 2005 is up 24% on November 2004, showing a buoyant optimism over and above the festive cheer.
The Mandis/Adecco Job Creation Index is the ongoing monthly tracker of UK jobs created across 21 industries in the UK that enables year on year monthly comparisons. This ’live’ data is gathered via research during each month into the employment intentions of a representative sample of over 500 UK organisations, providing a key, up-to-date indicator on economic performance and confidence across the sectors. The monthly study is conducted by Mandis Business Intelligence and sponsored by Adecco, the UK’s largest recruiter.
