For the past 7 years, Upwardly Global (UpGlo) has been helping work authorized immigrant professionals restart their careers in the United States. Headquartered in San Francisco, and with an established office in New York City, UpGlo opened a new branch in Chicago earlier this year. The mission of this non-profit social change organization is to provide professional immigrants, refugees and political asylees from developing countries, the tools and training they need to succeed in landing a job in their professional fields.
Rebecca Tancredi, UpGlo Chicagoís Program Manager, recognizes that ìtwo major issues immigrants face when they come to the US are the lack of professional networks and American work experience.î Many companies and employers overlook candidates who have an academic background and professional experience from a foreign country. In addition to helping jobseekers, Upwardly Global forges relationships with employers such as Google and JPMorgan Chase to train them on how they can best tap into this talent pool.
All participants in Upwardly Globalís Jobeeker Program have:
ï Obtained a Bachelorís Degree or higher from their home country.
ï Permanent work-authorization (no F,J, H or other temporary visa).
ï Arrived in the US within past 5 years
ï Not found work in their career field in the US
ï Proficient English skills and basic computer use.
The jobseeker program includes workshops on interviewing, networking, and job search skills, and participation in resume revision and mock interviews with volunteers from the local employment community. In addition, UpGlo Jobseekers are matched with an American mentor who serves as a source of information and professional contacts as well as an adviser in the job search process.
Upwardly Global is the only service provider targeting immigrant professionals with high-potential for the American marketplace and partnering with Fortune 500 firms in helping them integrate immigrant professionals into their increasingly global workforce.
James, a banking and finance professional from the Philippines came to the US with over 20 years of experience in his field, and had a successful career in upper-level management for leading commercial banks in the Philippines. But when he arrived in this country, he struggled to re-establish his professional career. After months of an unsuccessful job search, submitting hundreds of applications for positions that he was well qualified for but only receiving a handful of interviews. After James began working with Upwardly Global, he used the skills and resources he acquired to maximize his potential for success. Recently Jamesís hard work paid-off when he was offered a Loan Consultant position with JP Morgan Chase in Rochester, NY!
