New Survey Shows What Americans Really Think about the Brits

A unique web-based project examining the relationship between Britain and the USA has been launched today

A unique web-based project examining the relationship between Britain and the USA has been launched today.

Created by British writer Simon Kerr the ìAmericans on Britainî project taps into grass-roots opinion by establishing what ordinary citizens really think and believe about the íBritsí.

In this groundbreaking venture Kerr is asking Americans to submit their innermost thoughts about Britain and the British to public scrutiny, and sparks are sure to fly. Weíve already had some extraordinary comments, said Kerr, ranging from rants on terrible British food to calls to get rid of the Royal Family.

But other comments have been more positive. Americans seem to like British cultural contributions - weíve had praise for our rock groups, our actors and believe it or not our sitcoms.

So far however, and perhaps unusually given the current international situation, there have been few comments on Britain as Americaís ally.

Perhaps thatís because Britain will always be the old enemy? says Kerr.

The background to the project is Kerrís fascination with international relationships. He believes thatís a fascination shared not only by the British public but also by all people from all nations.

We all catch fleeting glimpses of other countries and peoples in the news and the papers and consciously or unconsciously we form an opinion.

You might think that people just absorb the normal cultural stereotypes, and certainly we expect to get a lot comments on the weather and stiff upper lips, but most people see beyond that and form some really quite insightful and individual opinions ñ and those are important because everyone wants to know just what people really think about them and this project delivers it on a national scale.

But experts are not wanted. ìItís importantî, Kerr commented, ìthat the project receives just honest opinions from ordinary Americans.

ìIt doesnít matter if theyíve never been to Britain, it doesnít matter what their opinions are - pleasant or rude, sad or funny, short or long ñ whatís important is just telling us what you really thinkî.

All Americans are invited to access the projectís web site at www.americans-on-britain.com donate their thoughts and opinions ñ good and bad. The results of the project will be published in a book Americans on Britain due out next spring.
